    West Yorkshire Liberal Democrats have chosen high profile Leeds City Councillor Stewart Golton as their candidate for West Yorkshire Mayor.

    An elected councillor for 20 years, Stewart is the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Leeds City Council. He is the party's sole representative on the West Yorkshire Combined Authority where he has been critical of the record of the Labour-dominated body.

    The Lib Dems are urging Leeds City Council to think again after they gave the development of 152 houses on the Horsforth Campus site provisional planning permission.

    A City Council planning committee accepted the principle of development on the site, but did ask the developers to rethink their proposals.

    Local Liberal Democrats were delighted that Horsforth Town Council has passed a motion that will set up a fund to help vulnerable families during the pandemic.

    There was an outcry after our Tory MP voted against giving children free school meals during the school holidays. Town Councillor Simon Dowling, who seconded the Town Council Motion, said: "It was disgraceful that Boris and his party thought it was acceptable to allow many children to go hungry.

    It's being nearly four years since the then Lib Dem City Councillors secured funding for the new skate facilities in Hall Park. Finally after much Tory messing about, the skate park is finally finished.

    Lib Dem Town Councillor Simon Dowling said: "It's great news that the skate park is up and running. The two former Lib Dem Councillors, who retired in 2018, secured funding for the facilities. So it's something the local Lib Dem team have been fighting for a long time."

    Simon Dowling would like to say a big thank you to local people who helped with the Fairy Door Walk in Hawksworth Woods and Hunger Hills.

    Simon, pictured here with his son, said: "After seeing the Rodley Fairy Door Walk, as a family we thought this is something that we could bring to Horsforth. The uptake from the community was fantastic. In the end local people decorated over 100 doors!
